Bogra,
May 18 (UNB) – With the harvesting going on in full swing, the price
of Boro paddy has fallen sharply in the district.
In
absence of government procurement drive, the poor growers are forced
to sell their paddy at a throwaway price in the markets to meet
harvesting expenses, including repaying loans they took while planting
the crop.
Market
sources said Boro paddy is now selling at Tk 200 to Tk 220 per maund
in the local markets against the government rate of Tk 320 per maund.
Local
farmers alleged that due to delay in starting government procurement
drive, they were being compelled to sell the paddy at low prices.
