4(UNB)–Although contraband seizures are apparently up, local markets
have been swamped with substandard Indian goods.

          According
to competent sources, Indian goods enter the country through different
border points in Sadar, Shibganj and Bholahat upazilas of the
          district.

          Reports
have it that some smugglers in collaboration with a section of BDR men
send their smuggled goods to various districts, including capital
Dhaka, by trucks, buses and trains.

          Allegations
are also there that the law-enforcers take action only against those
who fail to give them toll.

          The
taskforce formed to step up anti-smuggling drive in the district has
reportedly become ineffective due to reluctance of the officials
          concerned.

          Another
source in BDR said they cannot intensify their anti-smuggling drive
due to lack of logistic supports, including vehicles.

          The
goods usually smuggled into the country through the district include
sugar, non-iodized salt, egg, spices, fruits, medicines, drugs,
pesticides, biscuits, cosmetics, bicycles, motorbikes and spare parts.
