Chittagong,
Apr 28 (UNB) Already beset with numerous problems, Chittagong
Medical College Hospital is poised to receive an unpleasant jolt as
local PDB has threatened to cut off its electricity line on May 1 for
non-payment of bills.
According
to competent sources, the contractors, who supply food to the hospital
for its patients, have also decided to stop food supply if their
outstanding bills of Tk 30 lakh are not paid by May 1.
The
sources said the arrear electricity bills of the hospital now stand at
Tk 3.25 crore and the PDB has threatened to cut off its line if the
arrears are not paid by Monday.
Apart
from the outstanding bills, CMCH, the largest hospital of the
Chittagong division, has many other problems, including accommodation
crisis.
As
there is no other big hospital in the district, a large number of
patients from far-flung areas rush to it in the hope of better
treatment, but unfortunately the hospital has capacity to accommodate
only 570 patients.
A
visit by the UNB correspondent to the hospital showed that many poor
patients were lying on floors of the hospital for lack of beds.
Hospital
sources said on an average 1500 patients take admission to the
hospital, forcing many patients to lay beds on its floors.
The
hospital also faces acute fund crisis. It needs more budgetary
allocations to provide better service to the poor patients, said a
doctor insisting on anonymity.
Meanwhile,
an acid burned patient, Hosne Ara Begum 22, admitted to the hospital,
committed suicide jumping onto the ground from its fourth floor
Thursday.
Hosne
Ara, hailing from Satkania upazila of the district, was admitted to
the hospital on April 11 after her husband allegedly threw acid at her
following a family feud.
A
case was filed with Panchlaish police.
