          Feni,
Nov 14 (UNB) – Aman production in the district seems to fall far
short of the target this season due to massive pest attack and
          inadequate rain.

          Witnesses
Aman paddies on vast tracks of land in Parshuram, Chhagalnaiya and
Sadar upazilas could not mature for lack of rain during the growing
          period of plants.

          The
flow of water from Muhuri Irrigation Project in Sonagazi upazila was
also very inconsistent, as most of the sluice gates of the project
          kept open throughout the monsoon.

          Besides,
water from Baromashi Canal could not enter the water bodies of the
district since Indian authorities closed different sluice gates in
          Belonia area.

          The
water crisis aside, pests played havoc with Aman paddies in
Chhagalnaiya, Parshuram, Dagon Bhuiyan and Sadar upazilas, destroying
          crops worth crores of taka.

          But
Agriculture Extension Department has not yet been able to take any
steps to control the pest attack.

          In
the current season, some 69,000 hectares of land have been brought
under Aman cultivation, including 50,000 hectares under high yielding
variety and 19,000 hectares under local variety, with an output target
          of 3 lakh mts.
