Gopalganj,
Apr 12 (UNB)- Frequent natural calamities like flood, cyclone and
river erosion forced many women in the district to sell their labors
for survival.
In
recent times a large number of unmarried girls and divorced women laborers
are working in rice mills, brick fields, construction farms causing
concern among the social welfare organizations.
Calamities
destroyed the crops in the field, eroded the arable land and
homesteads of the poor and marginal farmers rendering them poor and
hapless.
For
their survival and to support the families young girls and
abandoned women are compelled to work along with men.
A
competent source of district social welfare department said some
20,000 women are working as day laborers in five thanas of the
district.
Local
elite felt that these hapless women should be given soft loan for
self-employment purposes.
