          Gopalganj,
Apr 24 (UNB) – Construction works on various development projects in
the district are seriously being hampered due to soaring price of
          cement.

          Local
cement is now selling here at Tk 300-325 per bag against its previous
price of Tk 235-240, while the imported one at Tk 275-300 against Tk
          200-220 a few months back.

          Traders
attributed the price hike of cement to its short supply caused by
          sharp fall in its import.

          Market
sources said the district has a demand for 30,000 bags of cement a
day, but the present supply stands at only 10,000 bags.

          Taking
advantage of the situation, a section of dishonest traders are
supplying substandard cement to local markets in blind pursuit of
          profit.

          The
sources said the southwestern region bears the burnt of the prevailing
cement crisis as the traders are supplying cement to other parts of
the country for making windfall profit.
