Jamalpur,
July 31 (UNB) – Local markets have been flooded with pineapples
produced in the vast area of Modhupur garh and other parts of the
district in the current season.
Local
people said pineapple started coming into the market since the
beginning of the current month and it is found abundant during Friday
and Monday hat days in Nandina bazar of Sadar upazila.
The
growers said they have achieved the bumper production after
cultivating the juicy fruit in Modhupur garh, Bashchora, East
Bashchora, Chhutia hill and Polashtola of Sadar upazila.
While
visiting Nandina bazar, UNB correspondent found the wholesale market
is flooded with huge quantity of pineapple and the farmers occupied
the roads for not getting space in the market.
Buyers
from Dhaka and northern parts of the country are purchasing per-100
pineapples between Tk 300 and Tk 550 depending on sizes.
The
farmers, however, alleged that they could not carry their yield safely
to distant markets as the extortionists often barricade their way and
collect tolls from them. They said the extortionists took away the
produce even from their fields in number of occasions.
It
is also alleged that a section of unscrupulous businessmen ripe the
immature pineapple by keeping those into a chemical mixed water.
