Khagrachhari, July 8 (UNB) - Forest resources are dwindling fast as a section of people have been engaged in rampant felling of the valuable plants, including bamboo in the district.

If the felling of bamboo goes on unabated, it is not far away when there would be no bamboo in the district, concerned sources said.

It is alleged that the wood traders have been able to carry out their misdeed owing to covert help and assistance given by a section of dishonest forest officials and employees.

Local people said the Forest Department has arrested a group of tribal along with a chunk of 15,000 bamboos from Dhurang river in Laxichhari Upazila on June 12 when they were smuggling these through the river. However, the local Forest Department admitted that only 3,000 bamboos were seized.

Local people alleged that the smugglers are not smuggling only bamboo but also teakwood through this river route. But the concerned authorities remained mum on the issue.
