Kishoreganj,
Oct 30 (UNB) – Jute farmers of the district are facing problems, as
they are not getting fair price of their produce.
Market
sources said jute was sold between Tk 190 and Tk 250 per maund at the
beginning of the season but the price went up near Tk 300 when its
supply decreased to a great extent in the market in last September.
But
the price could not even reach the production cost of the farmers who
spent on an average Tk 300 for per maund jute production this year.
According
to official sources, out of the target of 15,545 hectares of land jute
was cultivated on only 6,463 hectares, this year.
They
said local variety jute on 302 hectares land were damaged due to
excessive rainfall after the plantation.
As
a result, the farmers produced only 52,095 bales of jute including
27,579 bales of Tosa variety against the target of 1,49,181 bales.
In
last 1999-2000 fiscal, only 60,403 bales of jute were produced on
9,740 hectares land against the same target.
Farmers
said following lower production of jute, price of jute straw has been
increased in the district and they were interested in selling the
straws to cover their loss.
But
it is alleged that the farmers are being cheated as the retail sellers
sell the jute straw at least double of the price they get from the
farmers.
