Kishoreganj,
June 21 (UNB) – Acute scarcity of fish has been prevailing in
different markets of the district causing problem for the people for
the last three months.
People
can hardly buy fish from the market due to its abnormal price
triggered by short supply.
Some
small varieties of fish like telapea, chela, puti, tangra, singh and
sharai are now available in little quantity in local market and sold
at the rate of Tk 130-170 per kg which is beyond the reach of the
common people.
Other
varieties of fish like hilsa, ruhi, katla, mrigel are selling between
Tk 160 and Tk 200 per kg. Big varieties of fish are hardly available
in the market.
According
to local consumers, low production in the district is the main reason
behind the acute scarcity of fish. There are hundreds of ponds, beels
and other water bodies but most of those are lying in abandoned
condition owing to lack of necessary measures by the concerned
authorities.
Some
pisciculturists told UNB that high interest of bank loan,
non-availability of high yielding variety of fish and lack of
patronization are the main causes behind the scarcity of fish.
Local
elite think that fish production might be increased by at least five
times if the government extend assistance for solving the existing
problems in the sector.
