Kishoreganj, July 31 (UNB) – About 35 families who lost their homes in 1988-flood and river erosion have been living inhuman life at the Nikli flood shelter.

The flood shelter established on the bank of Soijnee river at a cost of Tk 6.50 lakh in fiscal 1976-77 is in deplorable condition due to lack of proper maintenance and care.

The other eight shelters constructed in the same year in the district costing Tk 6.30 lakh each are also in a dilapidated condition.

There are no roofs, doors and windows in two, out of four structures in Nikli flood shelter as thieves stole those. Walls of those structures are also collapsing.

Besides, only one tubewell is available for the 200 members of these families in the shelter but there is no proper toilet system.

Due to unhygienic condition the inmates of the shelter including the children have been suffering from various ailments including diarrhoea, dysentery and other water borne diseases.
