Kushtia,
May 17 (UNB) – Non-registration of marriage is one of the many
causes of women persecutions including divorce and demand for dowry.
Marriages
of many poor families are not registered in the district and as such
the victims cannot take legal action against the unscrupulous
husbands. Besides defying the government restriction many people in
the rural areas marry second time without the written permission of
the first wife.
There
are certain legal safeguards for a woman in the marriage deeds but in
the absence of registration divorce has become a common feature in the
rural areas.
The
illiterate and poor guardians alleged that many marriage registrars
charge higher registration fees than the government rate. As a result,
they do not bother to register the marriages of their wards.
Local
elite urged the government to fix a token fee for registration of
marriages up to Moharana of Tk 25,000 to encourage marriage
registration among the poor and check the alarming rate of divorce.
