Madaripur,
Oct 4 (UNB)- Floodwater started receding from the town and two
upazilas since Friday improving the flood situation in the district.
But
the flood affected people have been facing acute scarcity of drinking
water as most of their tubewells remained under water.
According
to official sources the flood has affected about one lakh people of
25,000 families of 120 villages in 20 unions of Sadar and Shibchar
upazilas. The unions in and around Padma and Arial Khan char areas are
the worst affected.
Finding
no other alternative the affected people of Char Laxmiganj, Panchkhola,
Char Maguria, Mohisherchar, Char Kalikapur, Char Jajira and Char
Pakira of Sadar upazila and Char Janajat, Char Katalbari and Matbarer
Char of Shibganj upazila are using contaminated flood water for
cooking and drinking purposes.
Waterborne
diseases have already broken out in many affected areas and many
people have been suffering due to shortage of medicine and oral saline
packets.
Meanwhile,
erosion of the river Arial Khan has taken a serious turn in Sadar
upazila. In the last two weeks 30 dwelling houses and 300 hectares of
croplands went into the river. The affected villages are Farajirhat,
Char Kalikapur and Char Nachrahat.
The
flood-affected people have urged the authority concerned to provide
them with food and medicine without further delay.
