           Madaripur,
May 21 (UNB) - In spite of government’s efforts to eliminate
illiteracy from the country, Primary Education Programme in the
district faces setback for various reasons.

          Shortage
of teachers and furniture, poor communication system, shabby
educational buildings and poverty are among the reasons that hinder
          the education programme.

          According
to an estimate, the number of school-going age children but do not go
to school rose to 35,000 from 20,000 last year.

          Officials
said some 36,469 children in the district have so far been enrolled in
109 schools of 11 UPs in four thanas under Education-for-Food
          Programme (EFP).

          Of
the total students, 9,432 are in sadar upazila, 5,451 in Kalkini,
10,178 in Shibchar and 11,408 in Rajoir upazilas.

          There
have been allegations that many parents prefer sending their kids to
do odd jobs instead of going to schools.
