Madaripur,
June 4 (UNB) – Huge sweet potatoes are damaged in 10 upazilas of
Madaripur and Shariatpur districts every year for lack of storage
facility.
According
to agriculture officials, some 80,000 sweet potatoes are produced in
char areas of the two districts every year.
But
the farmers do not get benefit of it, as they have to sell their
produce at throwaway prices in absence of storage facility.
Sweet
potato is now selling at Tk 3-4 per kg, much below their production
costs.
The
sandy soil of Sadar and Shibchar upazilas in Madaripur, and Damuza,
Vedarganj, Jajira, Naria and Sadar upazilas in Shariatpur are highly
suitable for sweet potato cultivation, the agriculture officials said.
