Manikganj,
June 17 (UNB) – Wheat procurement drive appears to be a total
failure in the district as one percent of the target could not be
achieved since the drive began three months back.
Local
Food Department sources said the district was given a target to
procure 100 metric tons of wheat during the drive that began on March
15.
The
government fixed Tk 8.90 per kg of wheat. Seven procurement committees
were also formed with Upazila Nirbahi Officer as convenor to make the
drive a success.
But
sources said the committee could not collect even a single ton of
wheat till middle of June. The drive ends this month.
The
failure of the drive is attributed to inadequate production of wheat,
lower price rate than that of the market rate and unnecessary
harassment during supplying of the cereals in the godowns.
