Moulavibazar, Oct 21 (UNB) – Wanton felling of ‘shade trees’ of the tea gardens poses a serious threat to tea production in 33 tea gardens of the district.

According garden sources, an organised gang of timber smugglers is engaged in cutting the shade trees and other valuable trees from the tea gardens of Longla, Hajipur, Tarapasha, Hingazia, Holychhara, Muroichhara, Gazipur, Dildarpur, Ratna, Hajinagar and Sagarnal areas.

Experts said presence of shade trees is mandatory in the tea gardens for the proper sprouting of leaves. Tea production decreased substantially in recent years following unscrupulous felling of shade trees depriving the government from huge foreign exchange.

Apart from reduction in tea production, the continuos felling of trees is causing ecological imbalance.
