Moulvibazar,
July 27 (UNB) – A large number of handloom factories of Monipuri
community in Kamaljang upazila are on the verge of closure for lack of
working capital, wrecking the livelihoods of over 20,000 people.
Though
Monipuri cloths still have a good demand in the market, the cloths
produced in mills have sidelined the Monipuri ones due to high price
of yarn and other inputs.
Besides,
widespread smuggling of Indian cloths also takes its toll on Monipuri
cloths.
Even
then some Monipuri products like bedcovers, napkins, saris, lungis and
wrappers have great demand in the country because of their low prices.
Talking
to the UNB correspondent, a group of weavers here said they would have
changed their ancestral profession long ago had there any scope to do
that.
