          Moulvibazar,
July 27 (UNB) – Although a severe fish crisis prevails in local
markets, over 5,000 ponds in six upazilas of the district remained
          unutilized for long 20 years.

          These
derelict ponds, dug by local landlords decades back, have turned into
ideal breeding palaces for mosquitoes due to lack of maintenance for a
          longtime.

          According
to local elite, fish production can be raised by 15,417 mts in the
district by bringing these ponds under fish farming after
          re-excavation.

          They
said authorities could enforce the Pond Development Act 1993 to bring
          these ponds under fish farming.

          Apart
from additional fish output, re-excavation of the ponds can help
mitigate irrigation problems in rural areas, where over 1000 canals
have also long been lying unused.
