Moulvibazar,
Aug 1 (UNB) – Although leprosy is a curable disease, the number of
lepers in the district continues to rise.
According
to statistics released by a social welfare organisation, there are
over 15,000 lepers of 15-30 age group in the district, mostly in tea
gardens.
Doctors
attribute the growing number of leprosy patients to inadequate
treatment facilities in the district.
They
said the disease is completely curable and the government is providing
necessary medicines through health complexes free of cost across the
country. But many people cannot avail of the free treatment due to
ignorance and superstition.
