          Mymensingh,
          Apr 24 (UNB) – Some 7,643 mts of standing crops worth about Tk 8.02
          crore were damaged by nor’westers in Fulbaria thana of the district
          in last few days. 
           
          
           
          According
          to a preliminary assessment by local Agriculture office, only Boro
          crops valued at Tk 7.41 crore were damaged in the nor’westers. 
           
          
           
          Besides,
          vegetables, pineapple, papaya and banana on 180 hectares of land were
          damaged causing financial loss about Tk 61 lakh.  
           
          
           
          On
          April 14, a severe storm lashed the thana’s Naogao, Rangamati,
          Kaladaha, Enaetpur and Putijana unions causing extensive damage to
          crops. 
           
          
           
          While
          visiting the areas, most of the affected farmers told the UNB
          correspondent that they cultivated their croplands taking loans from
          moneylenders only to worsen their conditions. 
           
          
           
          Abdul
          Khaleq, 40, of Maddyapara in Naogaon union said he cultivated Boro
          paddy on 3 acres of land spending Tk 20,000, including Tk 10,000
          borrowed from a moneylender. 
           
          
           
          Meanwhile,
          local AED officials have put forward a number of proposals to assuage
          the sufferings of the affected farmers. 
           
          
           
          Their
          suggestions include agricultural assistance for the next Aus and Aman
          cultivation, delaying payment of electricity bills for deep tubewells,
          supplying Aus seeds and loan for purchasing agri-inputs.
