Apr 12 (UNB) – Over 6,000 irrigation pumps in 16 northern districts
are lying inoperative affecting irrigation to one lakh hectares of
land.
Of
the total, 187 tube wells in Chapinawabganj, 517 in Rajshahi, 188 in
Natore, 560 in Naogoan, 150 in Sirajganj, 951 in Pabna, 251 in
Joypurhat, 1024 in Bogra, 96 in Panchagarh, 224 in Thakurgoan, 507 in
Dinajpur, 190 in Gaibandha, 230 in Lalmonirhat, 863 in Rangpur, 183 in
Kurigram and 191 in Nilphamari have been lying inoperative for long.
Officials
said the affected farmers could not repair their pumps due to scarcity
and high price of spares.
Farmers
have urged the authorities concerned to help repair the inoperative
pumps.
