Netrakona, Mar 17 (UNB) - Firewood is being used in different brick kilns of the district defying the government ban.

The upazilas where the practice is going are Sadar, Kendua, Atpara, Barhatta, Purbadhala, Durgapur and Mohonganj.

According to officials there are over 100 brick-fields with single and double burners in the district. The owners of these kilns have been burning about 5,000 maunds of firewood everyday before the very nose of law enforcers and district administration.

Hundreds of trees are being felled in various parts of the district for use in the brick kilns. As a result, scarcity of firewood has been prevailing in the district for a quite long time, causing much inconvenience to the people, mainly the town dwellers.

Various kinds of fruit-bearing and other trees and bamboo clusters are being destroyed to feed the brick kilns everyday. The large-scale destruction of trees has not only been affecting the ecological balance but also quickening the process of desertification in the district.

The local environmentalists have urged the government to look into the matter and take immediate steps against the illegal use of firewood in the brick kilns.
