          Netrakona,
Apr 24 (UNB) – The quick fall in groundwater level has threatened
the standing Irri-Boro crops in 10 thanas of the district.

          An
agriculture official said 25 percent shallow and deep tubewells in the
district remain inoperative due to abnormal fall in groundwater level.

          To
overcome the situation, farmers of the district began reinstalling
their deep and shallow tubewells. But in most cases their efforts
          proved futile.

          Experts
said the groundwater level in the district went 10–15 feet deeper in
last few years, affecting the region’s irrigation system.

          The
most affected thanas are Sadar, Kendua, Atpara, Purbadhala, Barhata
          and Durgapur.

          Meanwhile,
drinking water crisis has reappeared in different parts of the
district as water bodies like ponds, small rivers, beels and haors,
          have dried up.
