Nilphamari, Feb 16 (UNB) – Although the High Court declared fatwa illegal, Muslim clergymen in rural areas continued issuing fatwa making the imam of a mosque in Domar upazila their latest victim.

Locals said Jumma prayer at Fakirer Tawak Jame Mosque at Khaturuia village could not held on February 9 following a clash between the supporters of the imam and the fatwabaz that left at least 15 people injured.

The trouble began when imam of the mosque Musa Munshi conducted the marriage of a girl from an outcast family on February 1.

Village headmen, including Abdul Haq, Khaleq and Jamsher, outcast the imam on charge of conducting the marriage issuing a fatwa that the imam could no longer be allowed to lead prayers in the mosque.

While visiting the village, the UNB correspondent found the village tense as the fatwabaz stopped pronouncing Azan and saying prayers in the mosque.

Pious Muslim villagers sought help from police, but they said they have nothing to do as no party filed any case in this regard.
