Rangamati,
May 18 (UNB)- As tension is mounting in the hill districts over
preparation fresh voter list, clashes may flare up between tribal and
non-tribal who are trying to establish their right.
Parbattya
Gono Parisad (PGP), an organization of non-tribal, is demanding that
the voter list should be prepared after ensuring their right of
settlement.
On
the other hand, 60 tribal leaders have urged the government to
postpone preparation of voter list until anomalies in the December
1997 CHT peace accord are removed. Their main contention is that the
non-tribal settled in the three districts should not be enrolled as
voter.
Leaders
of the PGP in a statement on May 15 rejected the plea of tribal
leaders. They said all the people living in the districts should be
enrolled to make the representation in Parliament and local government
bodies valid.
They
also called for removing the discriminatory clause of the CHT peace
accord that denied the voting rights of the non-tribal.
Tribal
leaders have urged the Election Commission to postpone preparation of
voter list until removal of certain anomalies in the peace accord.
Preparation
of fresh voter list began across the country on May 15 keeping in view
the general due next year.
