          Sirajganj,
          July 2 (UNB) - A UP chairman and Awami League leader was killed in a
          deadly attack by assailants five km west of Bangabandhu Bridge
          connecting road in broad daylight today. 
            
          
           
          Police
          and locals said Bellal Hossain, 45, was chairman of Saidabad union in
          sadar upazila and president of the union unit of the ruling party. 
            
          
           
          An
          eyewitness account of the killing said: “A gang of miscreants
          numbering 4-5 waylaid the chairman at about 9:20 am and chopped him to
          death with sharp weapons in broad daylight at Mulibari checkpost.” 
            
          
           
          He
          was going to the Deputy Commissioner’s office in the town by a
          motorbike for official business when he came under the attack. 
            
          
           
          “The
          assailants lay in waiting on roadside and hit him down from the bike
          in a surprise attack as he reached the spot,” says the firsthand
          report. 
             
          Motives
          behind the killing were not immediately known. But it was guessed that
          the chairman fell victim of past enmity. 
            
          
           
          The
          body was sent to the Sadar Hospital morgue. A case was filed with
          police in this connection. 
            
          
           
          Another
          UNB report adds: A school night guard was stabbed to death by some
          miscreants in the town on Saturday night. 
            
          
           
          The
          dead was identified as Jalaluddin, 55, night guard of BL Government
          High School. 
             
          Police
          recovered the body and sent it to the Sadar Hospital for autopsy. A
          case was filed with the police in this regard.
