Sylhet,
May 7 (UNB) – Water crisis has gripped the tiny town as its supply
by the authorities concerned falls far shortfall of demand everyday.
According
to officials, the water supply in the town now stands at 1.45 lakh
gallons against the demand for 4 lakh a day. It can only meet the
demand of 2.7 lakh town dwellers out of 5 lakh.
They
said the demand for supply water would continue to rise when more
areas would come under the newly announced Sylhet City Corporation.
Experts
attribute the growing water crisis to rapid fall of groundwater level
and lack of connections in some municipality areas.
The
municipality has got only nine pump machines to supply water to its
27,000 consumers, including the commercial ones.
These
pumps are located in Bikaribazar, Subidbazar PTI, Shahi Eidgah,
Bagbari, Kazitula, Topkhana, Sagardighi and two in DPH compound.
Besides,
there are three overhead tanks in the municipal area -– two in
Topkhana and one in Old Medical area. But one of the tanks cannot be
used, as it has become obsolete.
Meanwhile,
the work to set up three more overhead tanks in the town is
progressing.
