Sylhet,
July 17 (UNB) – A new river route has been opened to increase fuel
supply in the district to meet the growing demand.
Construction
of a new jetty has already been completed on the bank of Surma river
adjacent to the depot of Jamuna Oil Company in Sadar upazila costing
Tk 1.50 crore.
Expansion
work of the Jamuna Oil depot is expected to be completed soon under
the project taken in last fiscal year to increase the quantum of fuel
in the depot.
Official
sources said the jetty was inaugurated with the supply of 5.34 lakh
litre oil from Narayanganj Fotulla depot of the company through
Shallow Craft Tanker on July 5.
They,
however, said other oil companies will also be able to use the jetty
for supplying fuel in the locality.
At
present, fuel is being supplied here from Eastern Refinery, the main
supply centre in Chittagong, through mainly rail route but the supply
often disrupts due to shortage of rail wagons and lack of smooth road
communication creating a crisis.
The
sources said Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation has also taken
initiative to increase the capacity of two other depots owned by its
supplying companies Padma and Meghna.
