Thakurgaon,
Apr 12 (UNB) – Standing boro crop on thousands of hectares under
deep tube-well project area in the district is affected in the absence
of irrigation as deep tube wells have been rendered inoperative for
want of power supply.
Local
power office said some 22-23MW power is required daily for the
district, but only 5-7MW is available. Besides, voltage fluctuates
heavily as the district is located at the end of national grid.
Farmers
have been advised to operate their deep tube-wells after 11 pm, but
the power crisis took such an alarming proportion that it is not
available even at night.
Some
20,000 hectares under deep tube-well areas in 12 thanas of greater
Dinajpur district were brought under boro cultivation this year.
Affluent
farmers have been trying to save the crop by installing shallow tube
wells and irrigate the land within project areas.
