TOKYO, APR 12 (AP) - Improvements in Japan's economy are becoming increasingly visible, the Bank of Japan said in its monthly report released Wednesday.

"Recovery has started in some areas of private demand, as seen in a gradual upturn in business fixed investment," the central bank said.

The assessment represents an upgrade in the bank's view of the country's economy, which is struggling to emerge from its worst downturn in decades.

In last month's report, the bank said the economy had "started to improve" but that clear signs of a self-sustained recovery in private demand had yet to be observed.

The latest report comes after the economy fell back into technical recession late last year.

The government announced last month that gross domestic product - the measure of all goods and services produced within Japan's borders - fell 1.4 percent in the October-December quarter, the second consecutive period of negative growth.
