Chittagong, Apr 25 (UNB) – In an effort to attract more foreign investment, authorities are planning to set up 75 more plots in Chittagong Export Processing Zone (CEPZ) removing a 4-km power supply line installed in the area. Some 100 million US dollars are expected to be invested in the export processing zone upon completion of its expansion works. They said CEPZ has lost Tk 100 crore foreign investment due to plot shortage last year. There are 127 industrial units in CEPZ with an investment of Tk 245.38 million US dollars. Ninety of the industrial units pay the government Tk 6.50 crore every year in revenue, exporting goods worth of Tk 300 million dollars. According to the officials, four potential investors from Canada, Japan, America and Korea had shown keen interest to invest in CEPZ for setting up of carpet, zipper and textiles industries in last one year. But they later virtually lost their interest for lack of plots. PDB sources said 30 acres of CEPZ land have long been left unused as two circuit lines of Halishahar-Khulshi Grid Line and Halishahar EPZ grid were installed on the lands. Now PDB has agreed to remove the high-powered electricity line and decided to remove it under the master plan of ‘Greater Chittagong Power Supply Project. It will cost Tk 5 crore. BEPZA sources said plot development works would start soon after the removal of the power lines and they would bear the removal expenses. There are 75 industrial units of 14 foreign countries in the CEPZ and of them South Korea has got highest 24 followed by 14 of Japan and eight of America. |
