Dhaka,
Apr 4 (UNB)- Finance Minister Shah AMS Kibria today said the tax holiday
issue will be reviewed if businesspeople give the assurance that it will
not be abused. “We
aren’t going to cancel it hastily. We’ll review it thoroughly,” he
told business leaders at a pre-budget discussions arranged by Dhaka
Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI). Existing
tax break facility appears to be abused, and this practice affects
government’s goodwill to give incentives to industry, Kibria said,
repeating his allegations made at a meeting with Chamber leaders on
Monday. He
attached government’s readiness to protect the interest of
businesspeople and expected “good behavior” from them in return. The
Finance Minister took a rigid view on further budgetary incentives for
sick industries, saying this kind of support cannot go for an indefinite
period for creating a right culture of business. National
Board of Revenue Chairman Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury attended the discussion
chaired by DCCI president Aftab Ul Islam, FBCCI vice president M A Mumin,
MCCI president Latifur Rahman, ICC Bangladesh) president Mahbubur Rahman
and representatives of various trade bodies were present. DCCI
put forward specific proposals for the growth of IT sector and regarding
income tax, customs and VAT for consideration in the next budget.
