Japan's
industrial output fell in April |
News |
May 30, 2000 TOKYO, MAY 29 (AP) - Japan's industrial production dropped 0.4 percent in April compared to the earlier month, the second consecutive decline, the trade ministry said Monday. That was worse than expected because economists had predicted that output would rise 0.5 percent during that period. The Ministry of International Trade and Industry's forecast, based on company surveys, had been even higher: a 1.3 percent increase. MITI said it still forecasts that production, adjusted for seasonal factors, will rise 0.4 percent on-month in May and rise 0.5 percent in June. An
overall increase in industrial production in the April-June period
would follow three straight quarters of rises, suggesting that Japan is
finally emerging from its longest recession since World War II.
