Sangsad Bhaban, June 11 (UNB) - As many as 47 directors of different private bank s were stripped of their posts on charge of loan default from 1995 to May 2000, the Finance Minister told Parliament today (Sunday). Replying to Shah Alam Advocate (Awami League-Brahmanbaria), Shah AMS Kibria said notices were served on 139 bank directors under the Bank Company Act. After receiving the notices, 58 directors repaid their outstanding loans while 19 directors could retain their position following the court's stay order. Fifteen directors were exempted from the notices. The Finance Minister said some 54,215 cases were filed in Artha Rin Adalat against bank defaulters till December 31, 1999. So far, 21,617 cases were disposed off. He said if a person or institution becomes defaulter, new bank loan will not be sanctioned in the name of the default person or other institutions related to the default institution. Replying to a question standing in the name of Fazlul Azim (BNP-Noakhali), Kibria said US$86.90 million were received from the World Bank and US$273.90 million from the Asian Development Bank for different projects during the period from July 1, 1999 to May 31, 2000. Besides, US$296.98 million have been received from World Bank and US$235.80 million from ADB during the period for projects under implementation. Replying to a question from Wazi Uddin Khan (AL-Pabna), the Finance Minister said the growth rate of GDP will be 5.5 per cent in fiscal 1999-2000 on the basis of new estimate. But it would go up to 6 per cent on the basis of old estimate.
