Dhaka, (UNB) – Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association today signed a second deal with ILO and UNICEF on elimination of child labor from the country’s garment industry.
The memorandum of understanding was signed in Geneva, says a fax message. The first MOU to phase out under-14 workers from the garment factories was signed in 1995.
Under the first deal some 10,000 child-workers were retrenched from the garment industry and brought under schooling program.
“The overall objective of the second phase of the project is to contribute to elimination of child labor and prevent recruitment of new child labor in the garment industry through monitoring, verification and awareness raising,” said the message.
In the second phase of MOU, strengthening of informal education program for children and vocational training to facilitate transition to skilled workers for potential gainful jobs have been included.
The project will also enhance the capacity of the local institutions and agencies in elimination of child labor.
The second MOU was signed by Ansiur Rahman Sinha, President of the BGMEA, Janet Nelson of UNICEF and Kazi Tapiola of ILO. Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh in Geneva, was present in the signing ceremony.
