Dhaka (UNB) – Dairy, Poultry and Fisheries Federation of Bangladesh here yesterday (Sunday) demanded that the government increase duties on milk powder import by 10 percent instead of reducing it as proposed in the budget for 2000-2001. The new budget proposes to reduce duties on milk powder import in bulk to 25 per cent from 37.5 per cent. “Increasing the duties is essential for protecting the local dairy industry,” federation president Marshal Shah Alam told a press conference at National Press Club. He alleged that a huge quantity of milk powder with 400-500 BQ or more radiation is entering the country illegally due to lack of a proper milk policy and inactive and corrupt Standardization Institute. The acceptable radiation limit for milk is 80-120 BQ. Shah Alam also demanded withdrawal of taxes on all commodities for dairy, poultry and fisheries sector and subsidy for medicine and feeds of the sector. |
