Bagerhat (UNB)- Shipment of frozen shrimp from Mongla Port has been expedited with intervention of the government that had directed Bangladesh flag carriers to carry the shrimp containers.
Informed sources said 147 shrimp containers were loaded and the ships left the port yesterday for different destinations.
Some 150 shrimp containers were lying at the port in the absence of ships for more than a fortnight causing anxiety of exporters who sought intervention of the government. They had expressed apprehension that buyers might cancel the orders if the shipment was further delayed.
UNB Khulna correspondent reports: May-August is the peak season for Shrimp export from Bangladesh. It is estimated that frozen shrimps worth Tk1,500 crore will be exported from the Khulna zone during the current season. The export of shrimps from this zone last year stood at Tk1,300 crore.
