Bagerhat (UNB) – Exportable shrimps worth about Tk 50 crore remained piled up in the Mongla Port for want of container vessels. Exporters said they could not ship the frozen shrimps as the port is facing crisis of ships since last month. It also resulted in severe container congestion in the port. “The importers may cancel the LCs if we fail to export those item in time,” said one exporter who already suffered huge losses due to cancellation of LCs. Port sources said preservation of shrimp-containers in the port yard is being hampered due to power crisis as one of the two 400-KVA capacity generators has gone out of order. Container congestion has become a permanent problem in the country’s second seaport, as feeder vessels are not coming here as per schedule. Meanwhile, the exporters have reduced the procurement price of shrimp in the local market causing ultimate loss to the cultivators in this peak season of shrimp cultivation. The price of shrimp already came down by Tk 2,000 per maund. “The exporters reduced the price showing the excuse of ship crisis in the port,” the cultivators alleged. |
