Chittagong (UNB)- Loading and unloading in Chittagong Port remained suspended yesterday as unruly port labour organisation struck work protesting postponement of CBA election. Five labor organizations, including the pro-government one, began indefinite work abstention following a High Court order Sunday suspending holding election, scheduled from yesterday (Monday), for one month. The court order came upon a writ filed Mohammad Selim, a worker of the Port. A large number of ships, including 7 loaded with foodgrains, were waiting at the jetties and outer anchorage. The labour leaders of Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal abstained from a meeting with the agitating labour organisations that met with Port Chairman Commodore Golam Rabbani in a bid to resolve the crisis. The meeting was continuing till filing the report at 7 pm. Secretary of Sramikdal port unit Nurullah Bahar told UNB that they would continue the strike till the announcement of a fresh election schedule. He held the pro-government Sramik League for hatching conspiracy against holding of election. The agitating workers continued their meeting and processions in the port area yesterday. A port user said they would have to pay demurrage of US$6000 to each of the waiting ships per day. Port officials said they were trying hard to resolve the crisis by tonight. |
