Chittagong port to remain inactive for 4 days |

Chittagong (UNB) – The port city of Chittagong will virtually be closed for four days beginning today (Wednesday) affecting economic activities. The 4-party opposition alliance is poised to enforce half-day countrywide hartal today to protest the killing of advocate Habibur Rahman Mondal in Dhaka on Sunday and deteriorating law and order situation. Sramik Karmochari Oikyo Parisad (SKOP) has called for daylong hartal on August 24 (Thursday) in greater Chittagong demanding reopening of 11 towel factories in Chittagong Export Processing Zone, withdrawal of warrant against 30 workers and release of 45 others held by the police. The towel factories are closed for more than a month Following labour unrest demanding higher salary. Friday and Saturday are official holidays that make the total closer of activities for four days. Meanwhile, the opposition alliance and SKOP separately staged demonstration at Kazir Dewri crossing, Bohaddarhat, Kalurhat, Bandar Bhaban and Chawkbazar in support of their respective hartals. |
