Dhaka (UNB) – Bangladesh Bank governor Dr Mohammad Farashuddin yesterday claimed foreign-exchange reserves remained at a satisfactory level, but said it would be more comfortable if the amount stood a bit higher. “We will not have to import food for at least next six months. In this context, the reserve position is satisfactory,” he said regretting disclosure of the figure for yesterday. The central bank governor was addressing an exchange-of- opinion meeting with newsmen at his office. He said the reserve level lowered to some extent following yesterday’s (Sunday) payment of US$162 million to Asian Clearing Union (ACU). The reserve position starts building up immediately after the payment as the central bank collects money from the respective parties against the payments, Dr Farashuddin said. Bangladesh Bank has to pay the ACU every two months for clearing import bills. |
