PRAGUE, Czech Republic (AP) - Enemies of economic globalization met peacefully Saturday with the IMF and World Bank in a storybook castle, but outside the medieval walls, rival groups of communists, anarchists and rival skinheads racism, fight imperialism." Rival skinheads showed up in a local park, where they lashed out at the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, which open their annual meetings here on Tuesday and have become a top target for critics who say the world's growing riches are being distributed far too unevenly. There was also a group of about 800 communists and other ultra-left wing activists from all over Europe. Hoping to bridge some of the huge gaps between the big lending institutions and their fierce critics - and perhaps symbolically showing off the Czech Republic's successful transition from a communist to capitalist country - President Vaclav Havel brought the biey had nothing to do here." |
