Dhaka, Nov 10 (UNB) - Bangladesh today (Friday) beat four test-playing nations in terms of their first innings total in the debut test.

The 10th member of the elite club, who finished the first day with 239 for six, edged passed South Africa, New Zealand, India and Sri Lanka.

In the debut test, the South Africans scored 84 runs in their first innings, New Zealand made 112, India 189 and Sri Lanka 218 runs against their opponents.

The Bengal tigers are now only six runs behind the Australian total of 245 runs.

Zimbabwe scored the highest 456 runs in their debut test first innings, West Indies made 401 and Pakistan 372.

Half-centuries by Habibul Bashar and Aminul Islam helped Bangladesh score a morale-boosting 239 for six on the first day of its Test debut Friday against India.

A home crowd of nearly 50,000 went wild -- clapping, shouting, beating drums and throwing plastic bottle missiles -- when Bangladesh scored 200 after lunch.

Coming in with one wicket down, Bashar scored 71 runs before he was caught by Indian captain Saurav Ganguly off a Zaheer Khan bouncer. Islam, a former Bangladesh captain, ended the day with 70 not out.

Indian spinner Sunil Joshi captured three wickets to become the most successful bowler of the day. Fast bowler Zaheer Khan took two wickets, while the sixth was taken by pacer Ajit Agarkar.

As the score crossed 200, enthusiastic fans lit fires with paper on the stands before police intervened.

School girls and boys played cricket to entertain the crowd during the lunch break.

Three cricketers -- captain Naimur Rahman and Habibul Bashar of Bangladesh and Yuvraj Singh of India -- took a shot at the global fight against polio by administering oral vaccines to four infants at tea break.

The "Bowl out Polio" event was organized by the Bangladesh Cricket Board to remind parents to take their children for vaccination against the crippling disease during next week's National Immunization Day.

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh captain Naimur Rahman won the toss and elected to bat at the Bangabandhu Stadium.

The match was formally opened by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who met both teams. Ten men in parachutes, each bearing a flag of a Test-playing nation, landed in the stadium.

A gold coin was used for the toss and two replicas were given to the captains as souvenirs. The original coin will be displayed in the country's national museum.
