November 13, 2000

Dhaka - In the first over after tea, Ganguly reached his half century. He and Joshi had a lot of work to do and they concentrated on the task. Despite the grim situation, both went for their strokes andthe 300 came up after 94 overs. Soon they wrested the initiative. Joshi matched his more illustrious partner with some bold lofted shots, while Ganguly remained elegance personified.

They even caused the removal of Naimur Rahman from the attack. The Bangladesh captain had an unchanged spell of 27-3-89-3 today and he was easily the best bowler on view. Joshi now pressed on the accelerator and took ten runs off three deliveries from Habibul Bashar.

In the first hour after the break, India scored 59 runs from 14 overs. Shortly afterwards, Joshi pulled Rafique to the mid wicket fence to reach his maiden half century in Tests. By now the 31-year-old all rounder from Karnataka was outscoring Ganguly as the partnership became the highest of the innings and proceeded merrily towards the three figure mark which was duly reached off 138 balls. Runs came freely now as if to mock at the earlier batsmen. The siege had been lifted and the counter attack had commenced. Under its influence, the bowling became wayward and the fielding wilted.

The 350 came up and suddenly the Bangladesh total of 400 had come within sight. Interest now shifted on whether the Indian captain would reach his hundred before stumps and the two batsmen would come in unbeaten. But in the last half hour, Ganguly and Joshi put up the shutters, hoping to carry on their good work tomorrow. That was not to be for Ganguly suddenly got a rush of blood, jumped out to Naimur Rahman, who had returned to the attack, and holed out to Al Shahriar at long on. Ganguly's 84 was compiled off 153 balls and he hit five boundaries. Like the seventh wicket partnership which realised 121 runs off 32.3 overs, Ganguly's was an invaluable knock.

A keen fight for the first innings lead loomed large as Ajit Agarkar joined Joshi at 357 for seven. As the light grew murky, the two batsmen played out the last few overs to come through unbeaten with India 366 for seven off 116 overs. Joshi was on 71 and Agarkar five.

With the innings at a crucial stage, Tendulkar and Kartik resumed on a quiet note but Bangladesh soon had a fourth wicket. Kartik was finally out caught low down at silly point by substitute Rajin Saleh off Naimur. The left handed nightwatchman had done well in defying the attack for 159 minutes. He faced 119 balls for his 43, hitting five boundaries.

At 175 for four, the Indians were under seige as Sourav Ganguly joined Tendulkar. But worse was to follow when Tendulkar was declared out by umpire Steve Bucknor. He was adjudged caught off pad-bat by Rajin Saleh, again at short leg, off Naimur for 18. The Bangladesh players were a picture of uncontrolled joy and India, at 190 for five, suddenly found themselves in the unexpected role of the hunted.

Ganguly and Saba Karim took India past 201 - the figure required to avoid the follow on. About the only other note of cheer for India in the first hour after lunch was the fact that despite losing two wickets they had scored 46 runs off 16 overs.

The resurrection process commenced in real earnest in the second hour. Slowly Ganguly and Karim brought some respectability to the Indian score, showing at the same time that there was nothing in the pitch or the bowling to warrant India being in such a nervy situation. Ganguly and Karim also took advantage of some loose bowling to keep the runs coming along at a brisk pace.

The sixth wicket partnership had added 46 runs off 15.3 overs and looked good for many more when Karim was dismissed under strange circumstances. He went forward to Naimur Rahman and the next thing everyone saw were the stumps being disturbed. Even as shouts of 'bowled' echoed all over the ground, it was quickly apparent that the ball had come off stand in wicket keeper Shahriar Hoosain's gloves and then hit the stumps. Unsure of what exactly had happened, umpires Shepherd and Bucknor referred the matter to the third umpire. TV replays confirmed that the ball had indeed ricocheted off Hoosain's gloves but more importantly, at the moment the ball had hit the stumps, Karim's foot was just outside the crease. After an agonizingly long wait, match referee Raman Subba Row was seen talking on the walkie talkie to the umpires, whereupon came on the red light signalling Karim's exit. A bit unfortunate to be declared out stumped, Karim batted an hour for his 15, facing 46 balls and hitting two fours.

Ganguly's elegant batting continued to provide a ray of sunshine and Sunil Joshi came up with a couple of hefty blows but the Indians, going in to tea at 261 for six could not have been happy at the afternoon's work. For, while they had scored 96 runs off 30 overs, they had lost three valuable wickets. At the interval, Ganguly was on 44 and Joshi 12.
