Dhaka, Jan 25 (UNB) - An unbeaten century by young Ashraful enabled Bangladesh Cricket Board XI to make 255 for 5 in 50 overs against the visiting Commonwealth Bank Cricket Academy (CBCA) of Australia in the last day-night limited-over match today (Thursday). The right-handed opener played the anchor role batting all through the innings after former national captain Akram Khan, who led the day’s BCB selections, decided to bat first at the Bangabandhu National Stadium. And credit also goes to dashing Mohammed Rafique for his blazing innings in the last few overs that helped the home side to reach a fighting total against the boys from the famous academy, who showed impressive batting performance during the tour. Test cap Rafique remained not out hammering 38 runs off 26 deliveries that featured five boundaries as he had an unconquered 53-run partnership with Ashraful in the sixth wicket stand. Slow medium pacer Sumit Panda and left-arm pacer McDonald received brutal punishment from the pair in last two overs. Panda conceded 13 runs in the penultimate over while McDonald gave 12 runs in the last over. The hosts collected 75 runs from last 10 overs. Promising all rounder Ashraful batted masterly to score 110 runs off 139 balls with nine hits across the rope. He reached the hundredth mark pushing the ball on side facing 131 balls while his first fifty came from 83 deliveries. Right-handed Ashraful twice stroked stylishly towards the mid-wicket to reach the team’s 150 and 200 marks. BCB XI made a poor start losing the first wicket on 21 runs when Javed Omar Belim Gullu offered a catch to wicket keeper Hurtle off medium pacer Chaitra. The home side lost another wicket in quick succession when national batsman Habibul Bashar Sumon returned to the pavilion scoring only 4 runs. He was caught at mid-wicket by 0’Brien trying to play his favourite pull shot against Welsford. Anisur Rahman Sanchoy joined Ashraful to repair the innings and the two added 45 runs in the fourth wicket stand. Sanchoy made 25 off 39 balls before caught at deep fine leg by 0’Brien trying to flick a McDonald delivery. Burly Akram Khan then paired with little Ashraful to steady the innings, but their fruitful 69-run association in the fourth wicket stand was broken as Akram was dismissed by left-arm spinner Voges. But all credit to fielder Shaun Marsh who took a magnificent catch at mid-wicket running from long on when Akram take a swipe at a short delivery of Voges. Akram contributed 38 runs off 39 balls with two fours, and a six against O’Brien. Right-handed number six Sanwar Hossain was the other notable scorer with 25 runs off 26 balls that included five fours before he was caught brilliantly by Kent off McDonald. McDonald claimed two wickets for 59 runs while Welsford, Chaitra and Voges took one wicket each. |
