Dhaka-- (UNB)- A double century by Habibul Bashar Sumon enabled Bangladesh Biman to take a 200-run first innings lead against Khulna Division on the third day of a four-day national league match yesterday.

The day’s feat at the Jessore Shams-ul-Huda Stadium almost assured national flag carrier Biman of the Green Delta National Cricket League crown.

The national airlines team, which resumed their first innings this morning with an overnight score of 215 for 4, piled up 489 runs for all in 148.3 overs against Khulna’s total 289 all out. Biman now needs just a draw to lift the coveted title.

One down national batsman Sumon, who was batting with 70 runs on Sunday, hammered an eye catching 224 runs off 310 balls in 418 minutes featuring 28 boundaries before he was caught by Ujjal off a Rana delivery, leaving the total at 463 for five.

Sumon pairing with number six bat Hasanuzzaman scored 295 runs in the fifth wicket stand.

The title hope of joint league leaders Chittagong Division were almost shattered as they were trailing by 129 runs in the first innings against Dhaka Metropolis on the day.

On way to Biman’s massive total, night watch batsman Hasanuzzaman Jharu, who was in the crease with 28 runs, contributed a polished innings of 118 runs in 228 balls hitting nine fours and two sixes in addition to Sumon’s glittering 224.

After the departure of Jharu at team total 466 for six, the rest Biman batsmen returned to the pavilion in regular intervals to deprive it of another big total.

Jamaluddin Babu, who pocketed one wicket on Sunday, finished at 36.3-8-62-5 while Manzarul Islam Rana, who grabbed two wickets on the second day, claimed four wickets conceding 75 runs in 31 overs with five maidens.

Replying to Biman’s huge total, Khulna Division opened their second innings in the afternoon and scored 82 for two in 31 overs with Raju Parvez and Jamaluddin Babu batting with 29 and 18 runs respectively.

Nahidul Haq Shaon (9) and Salauddin Ujjal (11) were the two Khulna batsmen who were dismissed on the day while Manzarul Islam Rana was retired hurt with duck.

Anwar Hossain Monir took both the Biman wickets giving away 16 runs in his eight-over spell with two maidens.

Khulna will resume their innings today (Tuesday), the last day of the four-day affairs.
