Captain Jimmy Adams led a brilliant fight back to keep the West Indies in with a great chance of victory in the second Test against Zimbabwe in Jamaica.
Adams and fast bowler Franklyn Rose produced an unbeaten eighth wicket stand of 125 to take the home side to within 13 runs of Zimbabwe's first innings total of 308 at the close of the third day.
They came together with West Indies in deep trouble on 170-7 - and staring at the prospect of a humbling defeat.
But Adams, who still needs to secure his role as captain following the departure of Brian Lara, finished the day on 87 not out, in sight of a fantastic century.
And Rose, hardly renowned for his batting skills, provided excellent support for an unbeaten 53.
The W Indies, who resumed on 106-4, lost Wavell Hinds in the morning. Ridley Jacobs took up the challenge alongside Adams with some attacking strokes - one of which led to the departure of short square-leg fielder Murray Goodwin.
Goodwin was carried away on a stretcher and was taken to hospital for observation after Jacobs smashed a short ball from Murphy into his neck.
Zimbabwe hit back with the very first ball after lunch as Jacobs attempted an extravagant hook to a short delivery from Henry Olonga and wicketkeeper Andy Flower took the catch low to his right.
Neil Johnson then sent back Curtly Ambrose for seven, when he edged a catch to second slip.
Adams had a lucky break with the total 178 for seven and his own score 35 when Johnson at second slip spilled a difficult chance off seamer Bryan Strang.
The gritty left-hander finally struck his first boundary after 147 balls and 258 minutes with a glorious cover drove off Brian Murphy.
His second four - another magnificent cover drive off Olonga - carried him to 50 in 272 minutes, off 208 balls.
Rose, who has a highest first-class score of 96, mixed solid defence with a range of punchy shots to help set up an intriguing fourth day.
