6, 2000 PESHAWAR,
Pakistan, March 5, Reuters – Former captain Javed Miandad
was reappointed Pakistan coach for the forthcoming tours of Sharjah,
West Indies, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, officials said on Sunday. Pakistan
Cricket Board (PCB) chairmen Tauqir Zia said Miandad would take over from
Intkhab Alam at end of the current three-test home series against Sri
Lanka “Initially,
Miandad has been appointed coach until July 13 when Pakistan end four
month of non-stop cricket,” Zia said, adding that Intikhab would return
to his International Cricket Council (ICC) duties as a match referee. Zia
said Saeed Anwar would continue as captain, the PCB having no other option
when wicketkeeper Moin Khan sustained a knee injury and has to miss the
second test here. “Moin’s
injury disturbed our planning,” he said. Anwar
lost the recent three-mach one–day series against Sri Lanka and his tem
trail 1-0 in the three–test rubber. Miandad
was previously appointed coach in September 1998 but resigned two week
before the tem left for the World Cup in England last May and June. Reports
said he resigned because of a rift in the team but Miandad cited pressing
family commitments. “I
am sure Miandad has learnt from his previous experience. The board also
felt that he is the right person to coach the team, which is struggling to
find from and batting fitness (problems),” Zia said. “While
the board had no doubts over Miandad’s skills, the senior players also
wanted him as coach, I am sure the players have realized his
importance.” Pakistan
leave for Sharjah on March 19 to face India and South Africa in limited
