April 18, 2000 JOHANNESBURG, April 16 : A judicial inquiry into allegations of match-fixing against former South African captain Hansie Cronje will be launched in Johannesburg on Monday, the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCB) announced.Bronwyn Wilkinson, communications manager of the UCB, said Sunday a judge was expected to be named Monday and discussions would start immediately to establish terms of reference. Wilkinson said the UCB and the government departments of justice and sport would jointly brief the appointed judge. It would be up to the judge to decide whether the inquiry would be held in public or in camera, she said. Cronje was fired as South Africa's skipper on Tuesday after he admitted receiving what proved to be 8,200 dollars from a bookmaker in return for information about a match. He claimed the payment was for forecasting and not for match-fixing. On April 7, Indian police dropped bombshell allegations that Cronje was part of a match-fixing ring along with three of his teammates, Herschelle Gibbs, Nicky Boje and Pieter Strydom. Bangla200 News |
